identify what elements you dislike in your music

play a game: make a track where you forbid yourself from using any or all of those elements

other game: ask yourself the question and come up with 3 different possible games to solve this problem

The style of music I love the most and the style of music I produce are not the same but I just go with it. Not to say I don't like what I do but I just do what comes naturally and accept that as my sound.

If you do this I'd say you're less likely to come across as an imitator and although I understand the frustration perhaps it's better off to leave what you listen to and what you write separate.

sounds a bit like writer's block. Take a day off and go walking on the beach (ibiza trance), the woods (ambient), the city (minimal) or an industrial estate (techno)

Smoke some herb man it always works for me. Seriously though time off is a good thing. I havent been in the studio for about a month now and I have this feeling in my gut that I want/need to get back in there and when I do I'll just churn out music.

Perhaps you should just play some Xbox 360 games or stuff like that. It always works for me - try to concentrate on something different than music.
