808 alternative.... hm... I spent a really fun afternoon playing with a friend's MAM ADX1... and a few nice compressors.

I liked it a lot... the very same way I like the 808. Anyway... It's definitely 808-inspired.

edit... Oh... it's quite affordable I recall... that's why I bothered suggesting it.

I demo'd, Audiorealism drum machine and Nepheton but has anyone got any knowledge of the Novation Drum Station?

I am not sure I like the software versions, some of the sounds don't cut it for me, Snare, rimshot, hats, kick transient - although the congas, clave and toms seem ok.

So what about the Novation, is that any good. Or indeed anything else I don't know about?
I have to encourage you to give the d16 group another try. I haven't used the DrumStation since 1997 I can't remember.

Go for the Novation

Go for the novation drumstation.....
I have one, never let me down or dissapointed me a bit...
The extra outputs are also a big plus.
I route every output of my drummachine to a separate track on my mixing desk...
If you want hardware ,this is a good choice.
In that way you have the 808 and the 909

not a real 808 clone but you might check the new jomox xbase 888.

Yeah, I'd also say you should have a look at the Jomox stuff.
Although it is more about it's own character of sound, rather than straight imitations.

The Novation is cool enough - I used to have one - but it has a kind of weak plastic-like flavour to it. Not at all "alive" like the real 808. And it's not analogue so it has nothing (except physical knobs that transmit midi cc) that you can't get from a plugin.

If the sound is what you want from the 808, then go with samples.
Otherwise get a real 808.

Btw have you checked out the Machinedrum? It's a totally different sound, but it might inspire you differently ...

Thanks guys. I write a lot of 80's inspired Electro as well as minimal stuff and I'm particularly interested in getting an old skool sound with those tracks. That's more of a hobby thing there though. ( think Cybotron, Afrika Bambaataa, Hashim etc )

A Machinedrum is way off my budget right now, I think I might go with either Nepheton or ADM and maybe use a few samples too where I don't like the sounds.

Some of those other things mentioned look wicked, For my general music stuff, I'll be looking at some of those in future. 8)
