But I don't see what's wrong with gaining a bit of technical knowledge?
everything is wrong with that. just look at the academic musicians, all their technical knowledge brought them nothingness. sure, they know how to read and play the notes, but if you leave them alone to write a piece they wouldn't know where to begin with. in my opinion that's a curse, because noone teaches you how to be yourself in music. drop the silly limitations, genres and technicality, it's so superficial and ungrateful.
Drop the idea of becoming someone else, because you are already a masterpiece.

You misunderstood me.

What if I go to a party and I like Artist X. I come home and I want to hear more about Artist X and the kind of music he makes. Wouldn't it be a lot easier If I knew exactly where to look? In that case I can track down other artists of the same genre and enjoy them too. Isn't that more efficient than discover randomly new artists or kinds of music?

maybe we did misunderstood eachother. anyway, depends on what you mean with efficient. i prefer random discoveries over specific.

I hear influences from just about everything.

If you want to find music similar to artist x just checkout other artists on the same labels. Easy

just don't get caught up in the "it all started in detroit" bullshit. it is much more complex and textured than that remarkably popular myth makes out.
