I mean, If you know how to use really well a synth, you can make everything you want.
I'm using Linplug albino 2 (not 3), RGC zeta+, sometimes Novation BassStation and sonic charge microtonic (awesome by the way).
Anyway, sometimes I'm doing something weird. I'm using kick samples to make sub bassline, someone have already do that ? (It sound pretty good).
Of course, there are audio FX,EQ and editing on the kick ...
with a few efx you can get a nice glide effect between the kicks/toms and it gives a wicked gloooooopy feel. Woobly but not without an lfo being used.
Your Favourite Vst's for Bass?
BONK TOYS
my not-so-"secret" bass weapons:
SH-101 + DX-100 - the swiss army knives of techno for the last 20+ years
Minikorg II [the traveller is AMAZING]
Arp Avatar
Westone Electric Bass [live > recording]
TX-802
Evolver desktop
Matrix-1000
CS-15 + MC-202 [gone now - sniff, sniff]
oh wait these aren't VSTs
okay - AU / VSTs
1999-2004
mda dx10 [need an AU version, ]
2004-present
PPG Wave [nice for grizzly, gristly basslines - thick satin, rive gauche, etc] - will replace with the real thing soon.
ES1 [flada]
FM8
Oddity
EXS24 with samples of my old junk.. - pitched 808 toms
Ultrabeat
usually use ES1 + PPG for sketches but often finish material using outboard gear more + more.... the computer is often a recording device vs. the sound generator. you might wanna try the same.

personally it's just easier for me to get a fuller mix using hardware.
VSTi's work, but for me it's takes more effort. i think a lot of it is how you use it and your process of engineering the mix. sometimes layering the right instruments and using the right processing is *everything*...
i agree with Sines on the PPG Wave 2.V, i also like the SQ-8L (an Ensoniq SQ-80 emulator), the Minimonsta, and i've used the PlastiCZ in the past with some nice results.
