Some of them are more prone to hiss than others. we have a lot of pawn shops in las vegas, so i just started shopping, researching etc. I found a micro korg, which simulates analog parameters w/ polyphony for about $250, I also found a MPC 500 for i think $280, and an Electribe EM-1 for $150.
As long as you plug in & try all the stuff out, ideally both new @ guitar center & used at a pawn shop sometimes you can score a really sweet deal. if nothing else you can get instant gratification at an e-bay price. I know of someone who got a real 808 w/ box & manual.. for something like $200 in a second hand shop in michigan.
just saying it's worth looking. make sure anything you buy you reset to factory settings & update software when possible.
