your opinion?TO ALL THE PRODUCERS WHO CHANGED THEIR SOUND TO MATCH CURRENT TRENDS AND ‘HOPEFULLY’ SELL UNITS. WHERE’S YOUR HEART? fck YOU!
TO ALL THE DJ’S THAT ‘JUMPED SHIP’ TO MINIMAL FOR FINANCIAL REASONS OR EGO ISSUES, WHERE’S YOUR IDENTITY? WHO ARE YOU REALLY? A JUKEBOX, A WEDDING DJ? DO YOU EVEN KNOW? DO YOU PLAY MUSIC JUST BECAUSE IT’S POPULAR? IF COUNTRY AND WESTERN WAS THE NEXT ‘BIG THING’ WOULD YOU PLAY THAT TOO? fck YOU!
TO ALL THE NON HARDWORKING, NON SWEATING DJ’S THAT DON’T REALLY MIX, SCARED TO UP THE INTENSITY AND ENERGY LEVELS, WHO OCCASIONALLY PUNCH THE AIR WITH A SMILE LESS CONVINCING THAN AN AIR STEWARDESS, THAT HAVE 50 ‘FRIENDS’ IN THE DJ BOOTH, DRINKING CHAMPAGNE ‘MINCING’ LIKE FOOTBALLERS WIVES, TAKING MORE DRUGS THAN THE CROWD AND THINKING YOU’RE ‘UBER COOL’, HAVE YOU GOT ANY RESPECT AT ALL FOR THE DANCEFLOOR PAYING YOUR WAGES? fck YOU!
TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO FORGOT THE RAW STRIPPED TO THE ESSENTIAL BARE BONES MACHINE FUNK OF HOOD, MILLS ETC.. AND DECIDED TO CALL THIS NEW WEAK ASSED MINDLESS, SOULLESS, GROOVELESS sh!t ‘MINIMAL’. fck YOU!
DERRICK MAY ONCE FAMOUSLY SAID THAT TECHNO WAS LIKE ‘GEORGE CLINTON AND KRAFTWERK TRAPPED IN AN ELEVATOR’, A PERFECT COMBINATION OF FUNK AND ELECTRONICS , HOW DID THE BULK OF NEW SCHOOL ‘MINIMAL TECHNO’ GET IT SOOO WRONG?? THEY DELETED EVERYTHING BUT THE ELEVATOR. EMPTY, LIFELESS AND NO FUN AT ALL.
fck YOU AND fck ‘YOUR’ MINIMAL!
to all djs who want a bit of publicity by creating a potentially controversial facebook group.. x
I could only read some of these posts, but I think he was somewhat joking while making a point at the same time. I've met Ben a few times and have some friends who do shows with him. I don't think he's really being all that serious on the one hand, on the other hand its a bit late for the joke at this point. I know that a lot of his old cohorts who made techno, not just hard techno, but interesting stuff, were hold outs on the minimal sound cause it wasn't really their schteeze, and then one day, after the trend had blown up, they tried 'minimal' on like it was a new shirt, and experienced a resurgence of popularity. In an industry decimated by the post 9/11 travel and shipping industries, many older dj's needed to drum up more business quickly, put on vneck tshirts with a splash of pink, and started playing records that went "blip" "bloop" "blop", and new young kids started booking them now that they were current and trendy. I think he is mainly calling out people who switched purely because the market wanted it.
Sometimes I question this kind of thing, with so many dj's making records that just purely "work" on the dance floor, white noise build up, jacking snare, 101ish squiggly noise, what does it mean to be a commercial musician? When you are allowing the market to determine what music you make, is this not commercialism? Is it really underground? Or is it commercial music, when you make a record determined by what the market wants?
Just some thoughts. I think mr. sims is partially joking, but its a little late in the season.

If the text from his little rant has been copied to this board unchanged, he is absolutely only referring to the sh-t music and not the good stuff. He even gives examples of what he thinks is good. If I were silly enough to be on Facebook, I'd join his group. So much new "minimal" is just progressive tech-house made by the most soulless people.

The really funny thing for a minute was...
watching a few techno heads that weren't that into the minimal sound 'discover it' overnight, and the very next time I see their pics they are wearing scarves and v-neck t-shirts, like overnight! And guess what...Their bookings went up!
Some real bodysnatchers type sh*t!
