'pump up the volume' is a great documentary..
Import Records Chicago baby!
influence and history of techno music
About the concept labeling genres and recognizing them (whereupon a lot of people replied on "enjoy the music, don't label"....)
So, uhm, yeah.... I still would find it more efficient to know what direction to look for new similar stuff...
For example
John Digweed

minute 41-47 has some sounds my ears really like. Can anyone tell me the track names and references to move on.... The advice given above doesn't get me anywhere..... I don't even know those sounds are meant to be techno, house, or trance... So... I'm pretty much nowhere to discover new things, am I?

In addition to arguments regarding the history/origins of genres, one of the largest on-going conflicts you'll find within the electronic community is the dispute over the labeling of genres to particular tracks.

are you serious?chrisdisco wrote:- my gut says that the reason why people keep pushing this detroit myth so hard is the fact that detroit no longer has the same level of creativity or innovation that it once did.nubianmindz wrote:you've both missed the point.chrisdisco wrote:exactly. no one can deny the huge contribution that detroit has made to techno, but to say that it all started in detroit is way too simplistic. there was so much more going on than that...mlexicon wrote:i think you have it wrong...
to say it started in detroit is kind of...short sighted
but yeah go for it ask only dudes from detroit and ask them where it all started...im sure you'd get a non biased answer.![]()

Read interviews with these guys, check out both the 'High Tech Soul' & 'Universal Techno' documentaries, read 'Techno Rebels' and take it from there.
Everyone who's someone in techno will be accessed from that startpoint.
Even right up to todays innovators.
Yes Juan invented techno but in every interview he always, always, always mention those chicago house cats that were making house music before he made techno aswell as George Clinton/Bootsy Collins & Funkadelic who had a huge influence on the start of techno (admittedly their essence of funk & soul has gone from the music in a lot of quarters) and they will also mention Kraftwerk/Giorgio Moroder and Disco.
That's what I was getting at to the original poster, but you guys were the one who lacked the vision to see this.
In effect,YOU were the short sighted ones
Everybody needs a start point to pinpoint something and then find their own way from there.
Detroit is the most significant point for anyone to learn about 'Techno' music and it's history and I'm not really sure why ppl are trying to act like Detroit had nothing to do with the creation of Techno?

Did you know that Talla 2XLC used the word Techno in 1983 allready?
He worked at a recordshop in Frankfurt and had a Techno bin there for electronic music and he also started the Technoclub in 1984. At that time Techno was everything from Kraftwerk to Human League to Depeche Mode to Cabaret Voltaire, all the european stuff that influenced a lot of Detroit producers. So Techno was born before they called it like that in Detroit. They did their own version influenced by the european stuff combined with motown and other black music influences. So i wouldn´t say Techno started in Detroit, they "just" took it further and played a really important role of course. But Chicago, Sheffield, Frankfurt, Berlin, Belgium ......was also important and influencial.
PS. I think Kraftwerk first used the word TECHNO in 1986 in Musique non-stop

Wrong, I knew a guy in Africa who started techno when he banged two sticks together 10000 years ago. Kraftwerk was inspired by James Brown, etc......SLICES wrote:Did you know that Talla 2XLC used the word Techno in 1983 allready?

There are no definitive answer, but Detroit, New York and Chicago laid the framework for modern electronic music.
