You jest but interesting point...

Slightly ironic, but not just a joke. You miss the point that software is not only about 00001010011110101.... There are plenty of languages, formalisms, etc. above this lowest layer of representation - all possible forms of expression. Of course the terms for "well written" are different here compared to literature, but at least it is very well possible to look at it from the viewpoint of aesthetics.

I do test projects and train sales reps at a fortune 500 tax and accounting software company. I do some design and promotional work on the side as well.

Well I've worked for a outsourcing company as an Architectural Engineer, designing, drawing 2D and 3D plans and mockups for major civil projects here in Belgium. Next week I'm starting as a projectleader at a bureau that designs technical installations in commercial architecture (HVAC, Data, Elec,...) Only a kilometer from my door, what a luxury!
Also do some graphical and multimedia design on the side...
