i use both an old style (stick) 1g ipod shuffle and a 60g ipod photo.

i use the shuffle when i ride my bicycle because it's small and i can wear it around my neck.

the ipod photo is much larger. i use it when i fly on airplanes or when i drive the car. it's big enough to hold most of my music collection. i like it a lot.

i think it's best to stick with apple. the aesthetics and 3rd party software available is the best. although.. that new iriver clix is very cute and a good competitor against shuffle

What would be the best budget solution, also to record via line-in in mp3 format ?

I have a 1gb iriver T-30. It will record up to 320kbps MP3. I am very satisfied with it. I use it to record mixtapes.
