Its an animated James Cameron movie. Were people expecting it to be The seventh seal?

I'll definitly go and see it with my girlfriend and eat a load of nachos and popcorn and wash it down with a fanta the size of my head. Its a blockbuster Hollywood movie with cutting edge CGI, i won't be holding out for a credible story line or more accuracy in the part of the movie that addresses floating rocks.

Unobtanium... lol, ya. I think it was meant to be a little tongue in cheek so to speak. Some people sweat the little stuff though.

So I have been thinking about these floating mountains... the magnetism thing might not be a plausible enough for ya ec50. You may ask why the magnatism didn't affect the helicopter dropships... truth is, I dont know. Unless its a special kind of magnetism that doesn't affect objects that are contained within the system... much like we don't feel the rotation of the earth or the fact that we are hurtling though space at a scary velocity.

I had two other ideas. Compounds in the rocks could have an anti gravity property.

My other idea is that maybe the rock under the upper crust of the mountains was created millions of years ago from magma that cooled into super porous lava rock. Those mountains might be more empty space then solid material. Now during this time of strange geological activity a particular chemical reaction was taking place during the cooling phase. This reaction created a gas that was lighter then the natural atmosphere on the planet and once enough of it was created in the porous sections of rock, the mountains then broke away from the surface and began to float in the sky. In essence these mountains of rock are actually naturally occurring dirigibles.

There we go... the foundation of this science (fiction) is sound. This must be the cause of the floating mountains. :D

i appreciate you taking the time to explain the floating mountains (the 'halleluja mountains' was it?) but honestly i couldnt care less.

unobtainium just signals what the rest of the script/storyline/dialogue is like - dismal.

the cg was good - but not mindblowing (no i have not studied 3d graphics - but neither have the other 99% of people watching the movie) --- and def not a reason to sacrifice 'the rest'.

imo it was a bad bad movie, im sure it opens doors/new opportunities for future movies to embrace the technology and get it right, but this was in a galaxy far, far away from that.

I'm thinking Avatar = 3d graphic fanboys porn?

For me a good movie is a movie with a good story and a even nicer plot. The CGI is just a extra, a movie should not be driven on it.

I saw Avatar yesterday and it's just that. Incredible CGI ( I give em that), but a terrible story line and bad (read BAD) acting! So for me it was a waste of money and time...

@ Hydrogen

I know the money doesn't make the CGI. I'm a producer and a big expensive studio doesn't instantly make me a good one.

But I also can make a good track with just a software synth....

Unobtanium
i saw that thing in theaters when it came out and it punched me in the soul.
Hehe, me too. I remember watching that at the cinema early one Sunday morning in the worst possible state following extreme sleep deprivation and huge quantities of alcohol.

Needless to say it I emerged mentally crushed.

exactly! i saw it and to be honest, found all the subtext pretty heavy handed and the whole mythos stitched together from other movies, but i see it as a big, dazzling frankensteins monster of action and sci fi.

in the end, it was basically mescaline for your eyes. and thats all i paid to see. if i want high art I'll go to the film forum.
