Unfortunately most people don't even have the proper listening environment (decent monitors and minimum room treatment) to recognize if a kick sounds right or not.
A few practical guidelines can only help, IMHO.
How to create that perfect crispy kick drum sound?

I think pulling out the frequencies of your fundamental and/or doing your best to tune the kick to your chosen scale, works wonders.lcvl wrote:Tuning is def important, but just one part of the overall picture.MINIMALTECHNOHOUSE wrote:Its all about tuning.
Transient is a secondary thing.
I find the higher click is the most important to get right (in tune)....
Just remember that not all scales lend themselves to bassy kick drums.

i usually take one from the sample library or mix some single drum shots to new one. also add some eq and compressing if needed =)wob wrote:I know this have been asked a million times on this forum. But I can't seem to find any tips that can help me achieve the kick drum sound I'm looking for.
It's in no way special, I know that. I hear it everywhere:

I've been trying to recreate it microtonic and operator etc.
But I can't seem to achieve that crisp thud in the beginning of the kick. When I try to create a kick drum it's either a straight kick without bass or a kick without crisp kick and deep bass. I can't combine the two.
Also, I hear alot of people praising microtonic for being so great. Been messing around with it for some days now. But I always end up with almost the same exact kick drum sound. Can't get any good variations.
This is what I've come up with so far:

And this is my microtonic settings:

Should I use noise to try and get more variation? So far when I've used noise it'll only turn out like crap

yes agree, jomox also has the mbase01 which is really cheap especially for what you get : really nice analogue sound almost for free. if you ever walk into a tr-808 though and you have the bucks, buy it.M_FERRI [KASSETTE/AUTIST] wrote:for KICKDRUMS my choice is an XBASE 888.
it has even inbuilt parameters for compression and harmonics, clicks and all the other useful tools, like EQ, etc.
