two important things to do when you have an idea for a name:

- go to http://www.discogs.com and check that no other artist already has that name...

- and just google it... if it doesn't give you tons of results, it's gooooood (because when people will google your name in the future, they will easily find you)

I tried the disctionary method again and this time I got "grit". How about "James Grit"?

Everybody has an own name. I personally just don't find this very original.
