That reminds me of that Bill Hicks bit about the "Hooligans" of London vs. the Bloods of LA..

"Europe does not have crime the way we have crime."

I remember thinking a similar thing when I was in Switzerland many years back when they still had that "red zone" bridge w/ all the junkies & whatnot & my sister commented on how "ghetto" it was.. I thought to myself, "uhhh, you haven't been to America in a long time have you?"

The sketchy parts of Europe I've seen are Candyland compared to the sketchy parts I've seen in America. Not that I'm any kind of authority but you get the idea.

/just an observation.

Coincidentally, I think it also has a lot to do w/ why most Americans have a hard time taking European hip hop seriously. I think it's quite hard for the average working class American to conceive the "streets" of Europe are remotely similar to the tribulations of American ghettos, whether they've been there or not, & find it mildly insulting that their socioeconomic & cultural plights are being co-opted so naively. Not that I subscribe to that logic, but I think that's generally how it's received by most Americans.

/end tangent

In most of Western Europe, your probably right. I've never been to America, but I'd guess certain parts of Eastern Europe would definitely rate high (or low?) on the ghetto-scale
