Ableton vst midi

I am having a problem with assigning midi controls to vst instraments in ableton. Im starting to get the impression that you can't do it, any suggestions?

don't try to use the gui of the vst. push the little triangle next to the on off button on the vst and you should get all the available settings.

I know you cant pass through the midi directly to the vst via the vst interface but Ill have to try and see if the params for the vst in ableton will assign.

open the triangle, click on ctrl M (edit midi map) and click on the paramter you want to move with the midi controller, click on the knob/faser whatever of your midi controller, ctrl M again to exit midi map et voila.
