Newbie question regarding MIDI & laptop interfacing

Hi guys! Question for the veterans...

I have a modest collection of hardware (drum machines & synths) that I'm looking to get set up and connected to my Apple laptop. What is the best way for me to go about doing this? I've read about things like the MOTU lineup but honestly I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

I mainly want to be able to record all my instruments into Live 5.0 and then further refine my tracks once they've been recorded.

How can I do this and still go through my 16 channel analog mixer? Is it possible to do this?

You need an Audiointerface with a lot of in and outputs.

Can't give you a tip which one to choose because i mainly use software. But basicly that's it.
