you're about a month too early to find anything of value to do in detroit, unfortunately. go during festival time to actually find decent sh!t to do, party wise.

best place to stay, in the city? personally, courtyard marriot is probably the best bet. its across the street from the renaissance center, but half the price.

clubs? hah. the works or tv bar are going to be your best bet for something decent, but i'd just keep an eye on resident advisor for parties, most likely something thrown by paxahau, and find it.

record stores - go to threads, for sure, and melodies and memories. outside of that, peoples' music, if its still around, is the best option.

things to do? not get killed or robbed. i wish i was joking.

Hi Cloutier, thanks for the info. Is it really that bad security wise? I'm a girl and will be going on my own. Surely it can't be that bad...

Is it true i need to make an appointment to go to Submerge?

its not a safe city, by any means. especially if you look like a tourist. i would not recommend you go around taking pictures of fucked up, abandoned buildings on your own (ruin porn = move on people), at all. especially as a single girl.

i grew up in detroit, and i can tell you a lot about it, but i've been gone for about six years. john clees, our faithful moderator, will probably be able to fill you in better as he still lives there, but so far as i can tell, not a whole lot has changed for the better since i've moved away.

and yes, you do need an appointment for submerge. its not exactly the most exciting record store in the world, unless you want the 27th repress of "galaxy 2 galaxy" or something. its basically only underground resistance stuff, but really cheap.

question(s):

1. how long are you going to be here? entire month? just a week / 1st half of the month?
2. do you plan on renting a car while you're here?

still waiting.. :-flower
since I don't have a response...

Eric pretty much summed it up on the money. If your going to rent a car, you could stay outside of detroit, and be 10 mins away..
(red roof inn *Rochester / motel 8 ...ect / rooms for apx $50-60 just north of the city) that way you could visit during the day with other people.. and perhaps do some picture taking. having the best of both worlds..

TV Bar (9-2 am) / The Works (*one of the only legal late night venues in the city / [can] go until 4 or even later)

Also Grasshopper in Ferndale. 10 mins north of detroit / (woodward & 9 mile) is dedicated to house/techno 7 days a week.. only club that has ever attempted such a thing that I know of. smaller venue : apx 140 ppl, new remolded, newly tuned system, newly decorated, much more personal venue.. no hip hop cross traffic. I personally find it difficult to get into the vibe of huge clubs anymore.. they have a pretty solid running on Wednesdays...

If you get this send me a pm.
