the 101 can be wicked for melodic purposes, and it fits the criteria. The OP said, bass and melodic lines - well, melody and bass usually ( not always ) are monophonic. Raw, hands on, etc. Great tone - ( you don't get horrible sound at the top end with analogue, it's still a pure tone.)

I'm only just realising how versatile my 101 is, I was musically inexperienced when I had one the first time around, it's a simple synth but man, it's so hard to get a bad sound out of it.

yeah mate, defo  . Software/VA can work in the middle frequencies but I can really see the difference in top and low end just by having the 101 again. I can get by with what I got but have to realise the sweet spots of VA/software - co's it's just not right at all at certian frequencies to my ears.

and if even those synths are not doing the trick, then i'll advice you to try to make a DIY Doepfer synth.
Mono, but capable of LOADS of stuff.

That depends on the quality of your parts, knobs, casing etc.
But at least you have to buy the pcb (120€), the wires (20€) and the PSU (50€)

You can expand the synth as much as you like as in CV/Audio ins/outs.
Though you have 1 vco, 1vca, 1 vcf, 1 lfo and 1 adsr (+ glide) it's quite a beast.

A bit of soldering skills and electronic engineering skills is necessary.

Here are some movies of some DIY doepfer synths :

This dude wired up multiple DIY pcb's and also some dark energy/dark times.
Still monophonic but you can make chords with the semi knob etc.

Here's a smaller example :

Just type in DIY Doepfer into youtube and you'll get some examples.

You can also try to make a MFOS DIY synth. They give you most of the parts. Front of the case, the necessary parts, etc.
Though they also provide just some parts. check out http://www.musicfromouterspace.com

You can place an order apparently. DV have them listed at £429. It looks great, has loads of features and is priced very well, the sliders look a bit delicate though.
