bro you gotto sort out the sync. absolute necessity.

how are you doing it ? can you explain exactly what you're doing ?

ive had 4 different SH101s over the years and they all tuned to concert pitch at 10 o'clock

Thanks for all the pointers. Lot's of experimenting to do, this should get me started in the right direction. After I posted here, I also sent the guy who the track belongs to a message asking him to share his technique for this particular sound. Here's his reply:
The one on soundcloud, it's a combination of a flat synth and a pitched down bass tone. A flat tone given by operator in ableton. A lot of compression is used yes, and EQ's to make sure the synth just sits on top of the bass. Used analogue avalon compressors in the final mix. It's just a matter of tweaking frequencies until you get the right balance, and to get the kick drum also at the right freq to sit with the bassline.

Happy to help :)

^^^

avalon compressors - wish i could afford one of those mofos !

then i'd be happy to use compression. dont expect the same results from software compression.

I will jot down the things I do both on the 101 and the CV & midi part of the Bass Station and post it up. I'm not in front of anything at the minute so I would probably miss some important info off my head.

I haven't been using the PC ( ableton Live ) for midi in these little attempts though, I was using the machinedrums internal midi machines to sequence the novation bass station and the novation was connect to the 101 via the cv & gates in/outs. I don't know what I was expecting as I have never tried to sequence analog gear via a converter before but I entered a pattern for the novation on the apporopriate channel on the machinedrum ( had to use a parameter lock to alter notes ) and that was running fine if I remember right but I think I was expecting the 101 to be playing that pattern also.

Like I say, I will have to set it up again and take note of what I'm doing and get back because I'm probably missing a lot out just now.

it should just be a case of sending a pattern to a midi channel on the BS and it should mirror that pattern to the CV / gate outs, ( but its so long since i had a BS that i cant remember how to set up the CV / gate outs, presumably you just have to set the midi channel) you only need patchcords going from the BS outs to the SH101 ins.

it shouldnt do anything weird. the 101 should play exactly the same notes as the BS is playing.

Yeah, it was all connected right, I'm gonna give it a go in a few hrs through Live. The BS has had midi issues since I had it, I am not sure whether this will have any affect or not but I guess I'll find out.

( Another Roland SH-2 has reared its head on Gumtree. £399 but a little cosmetically challenged ) - Just like the ex missus then! http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/roland-sh-2/94461204

I know it sounds obvious, but it's not because of note priority?

Note priority? I'm not sure about specific cause, I'm not working today so I need to do a pile of tests with a number of things. I keep putting them off but I gotta nail these problems once and for all.

Anyway, @ steevio, y'know I don't think I have ever gone for a pulse wave for bass. Absolutely no idea why, I just nearly always choose a sawtooth first and a LP filter. When I read this, I just created a small step sequence on the 101 and shaped the envelope to what I wanted and just used the Pulse waveform and nothing else. With the 101 it's obviously a square when the slider is at the bottom and your typical thin pulse at the top but there's some nice bass with that single waveform alone...I was setting the pulse width to 4 on the slider with no PWM ie: set to manual ( I don't like PWM on bass ) There's a nice rounded tone right there without the need for the sawtooth or sub oscillators.

One thing I just don't get with the 101, is unlike other synths, the 3 waveforms never seem to be out of phase or cause a cancellation of any kind. The main thing with certain software or V/A synths I have used, is that there's only a very small sweet spot where a combination of oscillators maintain any sense of weight for bass duties. Witht he 101, I'm getting the impression no matter what I do with the mix of the voices or the width of the pulse wave, there's always weight and depth. I don't get how this can be in an analogue synth. If it were digitally controlled or running sampled waveforms I could understand how it would be possible to align the waveforms so that you could avoid phase cancellation or something. Just an observation I have found, maybe it's that each waveform can't be detuned or something????
