Re: [Article] The Cost of a Free Culture
great read! the bandwidth used, the time spent by artists recording/writing/composing and the netlabels efforts spent on finding them. creative commons culture costs money and time, sonicsquirrel and archive.org rely on donations and grants to do what they do. this represents the most beautiful and hopeful version of internet culture to me. a place where the free exchange of ideas and art can happen, without legal issues of piracy and ownership to entangle and ruin this flow.
this is why i exclusively release in creative commons licenses. even if i were signed to a label it would have to be a mutual agreement that my works are NOT copyrighted and are fall under CC. like NIN and the knife (tommorow in a year is CC).

it also brings up a good point about the small percentage of feedback that artists get in relation to the number of downloads. if you like a release, the artist/label is sure to appreciate anyone taking the short amount of time to let them know, and will motivate more great music to come or even if you don't like something, maybe some constructive criticism will push them to try something new next time!
