Precise low end like Pedro, Ricardo... particularly the kick

Post by tintin2085 »

Hi all, I know how to make fat kicks but I can't arrive to make a precise kick like the old productions of Villalobos on Playhouse or like some underground vinyl only unreleased tracks -twisted -twisted played by the romanians (Livio & Roby, Kozo, Rhadoo...) actually.
I know that the bass play a big role in the power of the kick and if you want to have a razor sharp kick you need to have a globally clean low end..

An exemple:

Villalobos is the master for this :-sta

Thanks in advance for your tips ;)

load the track into wavelab/audacity etc. and run a lowpass at 120 Hz over it. Then study the result. Envelopes, levels of kick sub to bass sub, rhtyhm etc. Should be pretty simple to figure out the sub region, mate.

Isn't all of Villalobos older stuff the 808? And usually very similar basses. Like almost single waveforms and stuff. I'm thinking of stuff like 808 bass queen and so on. Didnt have the chance to listen to your example but yeah 808 and simple bass is my 2 cents

Yep agreed with the above.

I always thought that about stuff like baby ford and all that crew too.

They just make sure its the right freq so it sticks out and doesnt clash with anything else.

yes, like all good low end production, simple, no f**cking about, just choose the right waveform and frequencies for your bass, and make sure the kick's fundamantal is a complementary but different frequency. 2 minute job.

Interesting read - Tobias's interview with RA...

"With Ricardo it was similar. The reason I did something with him, though, was just because I wanted to listen to my 808 on his soundsystem. He doesn't have an 808, and he always says, "Ah, I don't need this machine." And he also somehow doesn't like the 909 as well. He doesn't like the real machines, he wants to have machines that just imitate the 808, you know. I don't know why. And actually, when I connected it, it didn't sound as good as I thought it would for some reason.

It's funny. He has the biggest speakers and subwoofers in the world. So I guess it's too much; it sounds kind of fat and unbelievably loud and full of sound, but usually the 808 in a club will sound perfect through the speakers. When the soundsystem is nice, the 808—without EQing and without compression—sounds perfect, but not in Ricardo's studio, I don't know what happened there."
