a nice alternative are the vst-plug-in-packs by cycling74, called "pluggo" and "mode".. several plugins created on max/msp. their sound is excellent.
I've respect for people who delve deep and really do unique and intriguing things with MSP, but the majority of people who toy with it don't get much further than basically doing the same things everyone does and sounding the same. I bet if you are willing to invest tons of effort and time, it's very rewarding, but if you are just looking to accomplish some pretty common tasks, best to maybe stick with something else where you don't have to invest so much to get so little back. There's an climax I think somewhere along the learning curve where it turns into more of a reward, but it takes a bit to get there.
