I own a Zoom H2 and am very happy with it. Good value for the money.
I like to use field recordings as background textures (mixing them in at very low levels, heavily filtered) or chop them up and use distortion to create drum sounds.

Tascam DR07 - cheap and cheerful suits my needs totally - I do the same as the previous poster too

Re: Fieldrecorders
i scored a portable reel to reel at a garage sale, was prolly used back in the day for interviews or who knows what. its pretty boss.
Re: Fieldrecorders
Go for the TASCAM DR-05, wich is in the same price range of the H1. It has better build quality. If you can check the DR-07MKII, it's similar to the DR-05 but has adjustable microphones.

thx for the advices,
the adjustable microphones makes a lot of difference? i assume that it makes youre spectrum wider for further away sounds?, they are both in an nice price range too...

edit
sorry, me being dumb:
The DR-07mkII records to microSD or microSDHC media, recording in MP3 or WAV (BWF) file format at up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution.
Re: Fieldrecorders
I've got the H2 and I don't really like it.
The sound quality is good but I think it looks cheap and I don't like the small button pad that's no good for my big fingers.
The display is also crap.
My friend has an EDIROL R-09 HR and I wish I'd paid the extra for it.
