you can do a lot better than a Korg R3. imo it's one of Korgs worse products.

what do you currently have in your setup?
what is it you like about the R3?

here is a list of better synths for under 650 euros.

m-audio venom
waldorf blofeld
novation ultranova
Roland SH-01 Gaia
Dave Smith Tetra

the first 3 are very similar to the R3 as they are digital, polyphonic and with only a few knobs. the SH-01 has more knobs but sounds sh!t (like the R3). the last one is real analogue, can't beat the real thing.

you could also get 1 or 2 analogue mono synths which will sound better than all the synths above but you can only play one note at a time. that might sound a bit sh!t but that's all you need for bass and leads.

it depends on what i'm working - solo i mainly work with software synths (NI FM8/Sylenth1/Synth 1(freeware)) - in group we use a Micro Korg and a Jomox X-Base 09 and that's the reason and the problem i wanna have an own synth (not another Micro Korg) at home so i can play with it everytime...

what is it you like about the R3?

heard it a few time and liked the sound better than the micro korg...
also looks like there're a lot of people who love the Multi Modeling Technology of the engine...
AND it got a usb port, which is very comfortable 'cause as mentioned i work mainly digital...
...but maybe that will change :)

Also if you're willing to buy used you'll be able to get a Nord, Virus or something similar in that range.

If you are already working ITB, I wouldn't even mess with VA right now. I would save up and buy either boutique analogue stuff, some hardware effects, or start a modular.

VST stuff is getting so good that there isn't much of a point in spending a lot of cash to buy a vst in cheap plastic case with keys. The R3 sounds like sh!t, the oscillators sound as cheap and plasticy as a free vst synth.

(and this is coming from someone who doesn't use a computer in the studio...)

yeah +1 casanova808... you would gain nothing from a VA that you can't do in a vst.... apart from a dedicated user interface.

save up and get something you will love for life. Use the time to research wisely... analogue is a strange and beautiful world.
