I know how much times it takes to manage a netlabel, since im involved in such work. I'm not saying you shouldn't support the artist. That would be like shooting myself in the leg with a bazooka, since i'm producing music withouth funds aswell. I'm just saying we're supposed to be in a creative business here, and i don't like the exploding lazy "BEG" short-cut tendenc. That's rather pathetic!
The netlabel scene are loaded with lots of various talent and potential. Why not use some of that potential to do something about the economical situation, instead of over exposing the great Paypal button?
A such outstanding scene should use their potential to recrute new audience and maintain and entertain the old. To gain financial support through means which actually gives something back to the audience is a far better and more professional way. I would rather buy a signed cd(-r) by someone, with handmade sleeves instead of pushing a great pale button which removes a certain amount from my bankaccount without giving anything back.
Too many Paypal Buttons where they don't belong?
I always thought the main intent of Net-Labels was to showcase the music of unkown and unsigned artists, obviously there is exceptions to this thought, I know that there have been a bunch of Net-Label artists music that I have downloaded because it was free and gave me a taste of their productions, thus if I liked, I would come back for more and pay for it, and I would like to believe same is true of other people. I do think that every site that offers something to others (to include this one) is definitely justifiable in having a donation box on thier site as there are always costs inside and outside of this monitor box.
Over at http://netlabel.4four.org (shameless plug ) I don't have a donate button, and I don't use archive.org either, I pay for a dedicated server to host it and my messageboard, to the tune of $170 per month.
A year or so ago I put a PayPal thing on my messageboard, as we were getting a huge amount of traffic, and the live-sets I was hosting was using over 1000 gb's of traffic per month. But alas, nobody donates, so I didn't bother putting one up when I started the netlabel. I now use Google AdSense to raise revenue to pay for the server.
I don't think it's an issue if sites put the paypal button up, but they're not going to make any money. As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, a service whereby you get a CD delivered, with full colour artwork etc would be a better way to get money to the artists, but I can't see any labels going for that, as it's very much a 'spare time' thing.

Does adsense actually help you out?louthy wrote:Over at http://netlabel.4four.org (shameless plug ) I don't have a donate button, and I don't use archive.org either, I pay for a dedicated server to host it and my messageboard, to the tune of $170 per month.
