I sampled the snare out of Michael Jacksons Billie Jean, actually used the reworked kick and snare as the foundation to a kit I reused over and over again on some Breakbeat stuff I did years ago. I'd sample if you want real snare.

Mic up your own snare and that's not going to result in some wonderful sample as far as I can tell. How good is the snare?, how good is the mic? The sound is going to be very raw and unprocessed. For just those reasons alone, I don't think the results justify the expense.

Native Insturments Abbey road drum samples, realy good i use it a lot... Or just sample the live snare from a live band, you have tons of that kind of tracks, just digg a little.

I think they use the 505 snare, compressed to the max.

If you have a field recorder, you can just go to the music store and record some snares there. I recorded a whole pearl kit like that. The cymbols and hi hats and snare came out great. The kick came out like crap, but I didn't expect to come out good. I got some conga recordings too while was there. 8)
