Texture tips?

Post by aciduss »

Hi... i'm working on my texturing technique... i was wondering if any of you could throw in any advice to achieve gritty textures.

You know, crunchy, edgy ear candy textures that could serve as background for a track, or maybe as a main sound.

I'm working with recorded sounds as well as synths and granualar stuff.

OK if you have any idea please tell.

Thanks.

1. Get a cheap early 90's digital hardware reverb.

2. Run a bright chord through the reverb 85% wet

3. Sample the wet sound at 12 bits

4. Pitch the sample down a few octaves.

5. Make a loop with this sound and record it to tape.

6. Resample from the tape.

7. GOTO step 1.

Resampling back and forth between different formats and bit rates is a very good way to achieve some "texture". Mr Casanova isn't being sarcastic this time! Try it!

Try lots of less than perfect reverbs with artefacts, pitching, track doubling with each track subtley detuned and perhaps some bit reduction.

The Ice reverb in maschine is a great example of a purposefully noisy reverb effect, there are other plug-ins that do similar jobs.

Get an old speaker from somewhere (crappy 80s hifi system?) and mic it up. This alone will add some texture, but for real dirt, start sticking pens through the speaker cone and resampling your work. Tear it all up, then sellotape it back together and keep messing with it. It's also a lot more fun than messing with a distortion vst.
