Brand new London-based imprint GLASSTABLE launches this summer with HUSH from the electronic music maverick Jimmy Edgar, backed with a remix from the increasingly tipped Kyle Hall.
The brainchild of a collective responsible for the Hypercolour label, award winning video production company Stamp Films (who will be producing a video for each release) and renowned London club night Pete's 50th, GLASSTABLE is to be an outlet for electronic music of all forms combined with great design, visuals and events. Much like it's sister label, a specific desire to be different and free of the constraints of trends is paramount.
Despite these high-concept ideals however, irreverent humour will undoubtedly be playing a part if some of the artwork and even the label name (taken from the setting for late-night, inebriated A&R meetings) are taken into account.
This wry wit and non-conformist attitude in mind, it's no surprise then, that Detroit's Jimmy Edgar has been picked for the inaugural release with HUSH. The 27 year old artist has captured the minds of many via releases on Warp, exceptional live shows and much vaunted photography work since 1999. Even his joyfully eccentric twitter feed draws the sort of attention most would covet, but with HUSH it's all about his musical talent, and rightly so.
Mid-tempo house with a respectful nod to the Motor City, HUSH displays the producers ability to take expectation and run with it before ditching convention and breathing life into something entirely original. Distilling electro, broken beat and house into something fresh is something many can achieve, but Edgar does it with such subtlety and skill that it becomes effortless.
Fellow Detroit resident Kyle Hall, also lauded for his unique brand of fusion beats, tackles HUSH and provides a remix which neatly explains all of the hype surrounding his output. Drawing a huge amount of emotion out of Edgar's original the young producer sets about creating, an achingly beautiful, rhythmic deep house cut with the sort of loose funk is drawing fans from across genre divisions.
Finally BTHERE see's Edgar inject some jack, grunt and soul into an electronic sub-120bpm house groove where guttural bass and static stabs combine with multi-delayed vos shots in a simple but enormously effective way.
