I'd recommend you to try and find a part with just the hihats or another clean part and highpass that at somewhere between 100-300hz so you are left with just the higher parts of the track -say claps/hats - whatever is above kick and bass. Then slice that stuff up and see what falls where. you could also inspect the panning on the slices etc etc. audacity is good for this.

I would try playing with note decay (assuming you are using an AD envelope) and filtering, that way you can blend the timbres pretty well.
