more hi-hats, rides in one song question

Post by zxcv »

in some songs i hear different hi-hats / rides sounds
eg first a hi- hat on the offbeat and then further in the track a ride on the offbeat
but when i try this to my songs it doesnt sound really well the difference is to big
can somebody give me some tips to create some subtile changes

Not sure what you are getting at but maybe the timbre of the ride and hat you are using is so different that it causes you to think they don't work together in the same track. Maybe it's the programming too?

im on my work so i cant search for an audio example
but out the top of my head so dont nail me on it:
claro intelecto- Signifier
first there is a subtile hi-hat playing on the offbeat then another louder hi-hat is playing on the offbeat and then in the last part a ride is playing on the offbeat

delano smith- this heart
is also a nice example
first there is something like a tamb on the first and third 16th
with a subtile hi-hat on the offbeat
then another louder hi-hat is coming in after a few min

i dont get it or do they just increase the decay on the hi-hat

in my opinion depends only in the samples you're using or in which point of the track you put this new sound..

If you want sonic continuity, maybe consider synthesizing the hat and like you say, altering the decay on it or something. If you are using samples, use a long one and shorten it for the closed hat and extend the decay for the open hat and ride. I'm not quite sure how you are having a problem with a sound such as this.

When you use samples, pick ones that work well together and compliment each other. I really can't think of much else other than sequencing and envelope shaping.

I really dont know i got problems with something so simple
the best result i got a hat on every 16 th note with different velocity and later on a hihat on every offbeat added

listening to claro intelecto- Signifier. to me it sound like one hat with different cutoff so it might sound like two, but i think its the same one.
even if its two, they work together but dont play at the same time.
the ride is panned differently so it doesnt interrupt the hats.

thanks for the tip about the rides to pan them to the other side
im at home and i meant delano smith- dee's gruv instead of this heart
thats a great example
to me it sound like
a hihat on the first and the third 16th
then a offbeat hat is added then the decay is decreased of the offbeat hat
and finally there is something like a ride
