Depending on the deal between distribution and shop, but returns of over-stocked records is quite usual.

About the numbers: anything is still possible from 200 hand-stamped records to few thousands copies of a hit.
Anybody knows, how many of Paul Kalkbrenners "Sky & Sand" have been sold? ;)

4 years later, are mp3 sales a lot closer than vinyl sales?

For a long long time the digital has been better than the vinyl sales.

I have a friend who did a paper on 20:20 Vision. They sold over 15,000 copies of Paul Woolford's Erotic Discourse, now they aim for 2-3,000 vinyl sales per release...

a question that i have since a long time:

how much copies must be sold in order to pay the expenses?

i know most labels press 1000 copies, when they are all sold, is it enough?

....ok this was 2 questions...

it all depends what you do. Artwork on sleeves, colors, remixes (and by whom),...
We only make 250 pieces of a release on vinyl, and break even is at 230 or something like that. We are not even too worried about it, if we come 'somewhere close' it's all good. We lose a lot of money every year with the label, but at least the music last longer then when we would've spent it on booze and drugs like I used to do

Anyway, vinyl these days is not about the sales numbers or what you are making of it, it's a sort of 'business card', it gives your label a bit more seriousness and makes you stand out from the million digital labels that are around. And it's freakishly more fun to have your brand new pressed vinyl in your hands after all the work it took.

In other words: it's all very subjective but isn't that what music is all about
