i would suggest to start listening to various deep roots jamaican dub reggea stuff, they are easy to find on emusic.com
then you can get the full vibe n stuff
when u think of it
maurizio & his gang started up from there or something , well i hope to a certain level...

In any case, my suggestion is always to evaluate the effectiveness of the chosen kick sound in the mix, and not only by itself. Sometimes a little attack click disappears when the kick gets mixed with all the other musical elements in the mix, but it helps anyway for getting better translation to less bass friendly playback systems.
