When casting a weary eye towards the impending chill of winter, it’s important to remember that the choice of company kept can greatly affect the way in which one wiles away the long gray hours. In this case, we didn’t even need to look further than our own backyard. Enter deep techno masons, Donor/Truss. Made up of Greg Schappert of Brooklyn and Tom Russell of Wales, their collective efforts have seeped into the consciousness of world class DJs, producers and fans of uncompromising techno music through releases on Synewave, Miniscule, Dumb Unit and Dilek. With this, their first EP on Thema, they have begun expanding their signature sound. The heady claustrophobia we’ve come to know and love has opened up just enough, spurring a graceful and startling evolution. We also would like to say that we’re very happy that Thema’s first release for the year 2010 is, in part, from local NYC-based talent. Mr Schappert has been a big supporter of this label for quite sometime and to have him and Tom step onboard is just about the best way we can think of to start the New Year. The future is here, welcome 2010!
Leading the fray, Sude 3 lays down a new path for the Donor/Truss sound. Stalking behind their diminished hallucinogenic soundscapes is now a confident, muscular rigor. There is no concern for taste or temporal savvy. It is blank, mannerless sound with a 1000-yard stare that melts through the walls of whatever shitty little warehouse is lucky enough to contain it. Call it ‘Big Room’—whatever—if you are reading this you’ve heard all of the verbal qualifiers. None of them matter. Something this raw never looks right on paper. The ambient interlude, Sude 1, is similar to its predecessor in its total disregard for fetishistic sophistication. Here we have two minutes and thirty-six seconds of doleful minor key refrain—a beautiful melancholic piece that functions as a tiny window into a vast sadness.
The flip is devoted to Sude 5, a track that plows fields otherwise thought fallow in it’s adoption of an expansive dub treatment. Trusted, time-worn components are assembled to reveal a monochromatic scene of barren elation. Oh— while we’re on the subject of components: D/T has also had the foresight to include 3 locked grooves of the straight sh!t.
And, of course, for those who keep it binary there’s also a very special digital-only treat: Sude 2 showcases the now-famous Donor/Truss psychedelia now trimmed and splayed over thunderous percussion. We had to include this one as it’s a perfect example of how the boys from BK/UK fuse intellect with undeniable physicality. Which is what it’s really all about.
Cheers,
Thema Crew
