in terms of in the box, +1 for synth1. it has the best filter i've heard in software. and its free. if you don't have it, go find it... ignore all the presets though, they are seriously the worst presets i've ever seen for a real synth.
in terms of hardware, future retro 777. that thing can go from 'nice bass synth' to wolf eyes in two knob turns.

The presets are fantastic imo. All mapped to general midi sounds. For me its brilliant way to start any new patch.
