I'm thinking of picking up a mic to FINALLY get into some field recording. Can people give me some recommendations on what to look into? I know/understand the technicalities/specifications, but am not familiar with actual models. Thanks in advance !!!

Get a minidisc recorder... one of the better ones with external amplified mic input at least.
To start out, even a crappy computer mic will do. You'd be surprised at how great things can sound even with that. If you are justlooking for sound sources and things that you are going to chew up anyway, that is often fine. You can look for a better microphone from there if you think you want something better..
