Thema Digital “goes Dutch” once again. This time with a young man dubbed Monotron. The long, rainy transition from spring into summer had us in a moody, introspective way here in Kings County, NY and these four wisps of hazy deep techno dovetail snuggly with our current mindset. Now if you have followed the goings-on at Chez Thema, you already know that the magic word around here is “poise.” Yes— “composure and dignity of manner; elegance and grace, etc.” Our latest addition to these ranks has this particular quality woven through every fiber of his work. As a bonus: courtesy of all things awesome, we have a special appearance by our friend and current man-on-fire, U.K.-based producer Alejandro L. Ross, a.k.a. Rudolf.
Material introduces us to Monotron’s brand of composition: it has a sophistication that eschews any need for complexity. Finely tuned percussion and an off-kilter kick gradually weave together with sinewy melodies. Moving in a more muscular vein, Novella sprouts a thicket of drones over a slinky, pensive refrain buttoned up inside your basic brick shithouse of a track. Trouble continues in a more rigid mode with a jack-friendly robotic bounce that chips away at the warm minor key lushness floating about. Calculation 221 follows with perfectly balanced, disparate elements that perform together without relying on pure juxtaposition. The restrained metallic squeals dotting the track slither between a sparse beat and lovely choral vapor. The capper, Rudolf’s offering, was dubbed the Calculation 221 “Red Lipstick Remix”. This is either because of the breathy sexiness that binds the whole effort together or because he was given a big wet kiss (figuratively, of course) upon delivery of this clattering, sultry beast.
We hope you enjoy all of these offerings not only as tracks...but as carefully measured electronic compositions. They are definitely the sort which yield new experiences with each repeated listen. Which is not to say that they should stay in the bedroom—one trip through the soundboard and these little beauties melt down into pure dancefloor lubricant.
Cheers,
Thema Crew
