Berlin’s Michelle Grinser returns with two more immaculate productions of deep, multilayered house, shimmering with detail and a sense of liberation. Following his solo EPs on Alphahouse and Junion – not to mention his roles in Dakar & Grinser (Disko B) and Grom (Ladomat 2000) – Grinser again joins Toys For Boys for further audio explorations. The EP’s title, Looping Music, might imply simplicity and monotony, but these tracks are quite the opposite…
“Loop No. 1” begins as a gentle butterfly, but halfway through the track, that butterfly reveals its fangs and talons. He may be appear harmless at first, but don’t fck with him! “When Will It End?” is built upon a commanding beat, but Grinser’s sense of nuance allows a reflective mood to arise between the dubby disco elements and the twisted, androgynous voice who recites the track’s title. Grinser proves himself once again a master of forceful subtlety, a compelling paradox for both of your brain’s hemispheres.
As a digital-only bonus, TFB label boss (and Contexterrior affiliate) Marcus Vector offers a remix of “Loop No. 1”. For this version, he concentrates more on the feet than on the head. Each of the track’s elements manage to keep their own ground, while still flirting with the others, providing lots of interplay within the 4/4 groove.
