this is a tutorial showing how to make a kick with operator http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFiuKTOCdFk
got some pretty nice results. you can perfectly control the sound of the kick..

what i also do is creating kicks by sidechaining (as well with operator)

How does sidechaining create a kick?

you put a kick in one track and turn it off.
then you load operator or another synth in another track and create a clip with the lenght (i use mostly 0.1.0) and the note you want. then load gate on the operator track and select sidechain + kick track (post fx). wet 100 %. i set up 0.6 for attack, 65 for hold and 33 for release

That hasnt made a kick though. Unless of course I'm doing it wrong. Sidechaining doesnt create anything, it just dips the signal right? So how does that create a kick?

are you using ableton?

the kick track has to be silent but the clip has to be played although. maybe thats the bug?

Yeah, I think I'm doing it right but all I hear is a sine tone from the Operator.

put the gain on 0 and the other parameters like i said above.
basically it's a sharp sine sound.

oh and the midi note of the operator should be as long as the clip
