That's odd. I have never cut 250-400hz out of my hats because those frequencies are never in them. What kind of hats are you guys using:?

I synthesize mine so most of the stuff doesn't need EQ as the synth settings dictate the sound. A LP filter set to around 17k can roll off extreme top end.

Another vote against compression on the hats here, at least anything firm and you have to watch the dynamics, all those velocity sensitive patterns can be affected.

i usually use bit reduction on my hats and sometimes rides to take out some of the harsh high end. To me this has been standard since people started sampling drums in the eighties. High Fidelity doesn't always mean better sound. :)

I've found that abletons bit crusher is quite extreme and makes in not very useful in this type of mixing situation. Each bit reduction tool has its own characteristics so you have to find one that works for you.

I really really like Jb's time machine. This is by far the best reduction tool i've used and come out with really good results. I havn't been able to find one that comes close to this in quality.

if you are on mac you might also try Tals bit crusher... but i really don't like it as much as the timemachine. I find this to be a little bit abraisive like the ableton one, but because its got built in filters and such it seems to do the job.

I'm not saying to crush them all to peices... i'm just talking about bringing the bitrate down to maybe 12 and the sample rate to 32 or even 22. Or don't do bit crushing... might not need it. :D

i normally like softening the top end and boosting the mids if you want hats that slap you in the face. I cut everything bellow a curtain point normally somewhere between 250-700hz.

sometime i just cut the low end
