CNTXT30 : Bloody Mary " Black Pearl ep"

Berlin’s Bloody Mary presents “Black Pearl”, the lead single and title track from her forthcoming debut album, featuring interpretations by Sascha Funke (BPitch Control) and Jay Haze (Contexterrior/TuningSpork).

Inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s controversial Les Fleurs du Mal (The Flowers of Evil), Bloody Mary headed into the studio with her friend and collaborator Sierra Sam. Her work culminated in a series of productions that reflect the French poet’s contrasting dynamics, discovering beauty buried beneath the darkness. Hence the title, Black Pearl.

Mary’s original album version begins by blending breakbeat and tribal elements, paving the way for the cinematic strings. This track is true to Contexterrior’s manifesto of releasing music fit for both the dancefloor and the headphones: Its percussive stomp gets bodies moving, while its sweeping strings provides the soundtrack for daydreams.

BPitch mainstay Sascha Funke contributes a remix that begins with hypnotic pings and pulsating sub-bass, but after cleansing the palette with this stark minimalism, we hear refreshing melodic chimes gush forth, overwhelming the tastebuds like a shot of mango nectar. Brave and majestic, Sascha’s remix is a glowing beacon of optimism for any dark nightclub. Next is label founder Jay Haze’s edit, which morphs the melody into a shimmering deep house context. Finally, a second appearance from Sascha with his sparse rework, a beats-only track for the more adventurous DJs who know how to work it.
