I go with the Monolake approach to not refer too much on the monitors but try to go with the venue's acoustics. You can get great results, never expected or you would never get if you bubble yourself in headphones.

Its a skill you develop either by being forced (ex. playing a few gigs with bad monitoring) or by shutting down monitors every few moments to compare.

I once saw DJs/artists, leaving the stage during the performance, run to the dance floor and then go back to the booth (ex. Monolake). You wouldn't believe the difference in the sound, from before to after the check.
