If I remember rightly Battery 1 and 2 used to default to a 12 x 6 grid with an octave starting at c on each line, as Atheory describes.
Then for some baffling reason for 3 they decided to make it default to 4 x 4 with rows starting at c1, e2, g3# and c5.
If you go to edit>matrix size>12x6 you get the 12x6 grid with the first octave correct. Except the subsequent octaves start at e2, g3#, etc...
So the default midi assignments only make sense if you're using the ludicrously titchy 18x8 grid.
It's maddening.
The workaround is to manually set up the 12 x 6 grid midi assignments and save an empty kt3 file that you load up at the start of every session.
Question for experienced Battery users
i downloaded the battery 3 demo and its was 12*6 when i opened. maybe they updated it or whatever. but yeah, as chucklechops pointed out the matrix thing would change it if it was anything but.
was messing around with it a little last night, that automation feature is really nice... can get kind of a stuttery effect, but it sounds quite natural.
