there's a demo of reason v4 available on the propellerhead's site, worth downloading and having a look yourself

http://www.propellerheads.se/download/

there's also a 14 day trail of live too, if you want to check that out

http://www.ableton.com/free-trial

Have they improved the sound that much in version 7?

if your thinking of changing you might want to consider fruity loops.

Fruity Loops? Are you serious? i thought that its a program for amateurs..

What he said^^

The number of pro FL users has really grown the last couple of years. Anyone dismissing it as a toy is pretty ignorant.

Reason is good, and would recommend it to anyone just starting out in music production. Only gripe I have with it after using it for 5 years is that it just feels like a toy, which was my reason for moving onto ableton.

It does what it says on the tin really, nothing else.

The "higher end" DAWs let you do so much more though

Yep totally agree. All the music I have ever released has been made on Reason, just I think if you want to really progress with things like synthesis you need to move onto something that supports vsti's or a real synth.

I disagree. You get out of it what you put into it. That said, I wouldn't recommend relying on the factory sound bank.
I don't understand your statement - its a contradiction..

that is exactly what I was referring to in 4.0 : it seemed to have a lot (more): factory settings, synths & generic whistles...
