The latest from label boss Phiorio is dark, pulsating and brooding slab of minimal techno.

In the Hole’s rather disorientating syncopated rhythms are innovatively constructed from huge throbbing bass noises and what can only be the sound of giant insects running round in a wheelie bin. An intense, challenging track that repays close listening.

James Venturi’s remix is a more traditionally-structured and floor-friendly. He accentuates the original’s pulsating drive, to create the kind of deep club track that would fill the floor at Cocoon.

The two other tracks on the EP are cut from a very different mould. Pragmatic and What are both lighter slices of Detroit-flavoured funk. Pragmatic has a lively, energetic bassline and percussion that is constantly on the verge of breaking loose from the track’s tight structure.
More melodic and relaxed, What combines stuttering, jagged rhythms with smooth lush synths and a bassline that occupies a lot of the midrange… the perfect end to an EP that started off in a very dark place.
