[NL] RATIO | 12 & 13 AUGUSTUS | A'DAM | ISOLEE LIVE!

Post by melon »

1st dutch performance | we are monster album tour | playhouse | frankfurt | de

There were rumours, there were whispers but nothing seemed to be forthcoming. People use the term “long awaited new album” far too flippantly but in Isolée’s case that term doesn’t even begin to do it justice. Five years ago, after a handful of 12’’ singles (including the now bona fide classic “Beau mot Plage”), Rajko Müller released the “Rest” album which blew minds around the world. House music had been stagnant for so long but Rajko found new ways to breathe life into it and made it sound as exciting as the day it was first born in Chicago. He also did something else, he created something entirely new and fresh sounding and made one of the few “dance” albums that stood up to long term listening. To this day it sounds like it came from another world. In the intervening years there have been a few more singles and several acclaimed remixes (for people like: Recloose, Louie Vega, Ark & Blaze) along with a few whispers that the next Isolée album would see Mr. Müller go disco. And now that day has come and “We are Monster” is here.

Rajko Müller, born in Frankfurt/Main. Lived with his family in Algeria at the age of 7 to 12 and went to a French primary school (and on the weekends to a beach called bomo plage). In 1983 he came back to Frankfurt with his family. Around that time his parents bought an organ for Christmas and he tried to do some synth-pop with a school friend and decided to buy a syntheziser and a drumcomputer. Rajko was bored by synth-pop in the end of the 80’s. Friends made him discover housemusic, hip hop and techno in the early 90’s. He started to copy this on his old syntheziser. He gave a tape to his friend Andreas Baum-ecker, owner of Freundinnen records, who worked in a recordstore where the Playhouse guys used to work. That was the beginning of some marvelous music by a guy named Isolée.

Some comments on the “We are Monster” album:
TREVOR JACKSON: “This album is outstanding!”
EWAN PEARSON: “It’s an absolutely stunning record and deserves to be one of the albums of the year!”
TIGA: “This album in incredible!!!!!! I can’t believe how good it is. Holy fck! The record is amazing.”
LAURENT GARNIER: “Definitly wonky - definitely superb - definitely Isolée!”

ARK DJ SET
pias | circus company | kompakt | kiff | katapult | perlon | paris | fr

Ark (Guillaume Berroyer) has quite an unusual musical background and is an accomplished musician & producer. Aged 13, he masters the guitar to play his favourite punk and ska tunes. Later he progressively turns to funk and fusion. As a member of the band THC, alongside with other bands like FFF or Sept, he actively participates in the development of French fusion scene. Then, in the early 90’s, came the inevitable encounter with electronic music. This is the time when his first track, “Tropikart” is released by the famous French label Basenotic. Around the same time, he meets Pépé Bradock and forms Trankilou. After their first EP “St Glin Glin” on Basenotic, they make their international break with the underground hit “Escalope de dingue” on Versatile, will be acclaimed all throughout 1995 by the biggest international Dj’s. Following this success, Ark decides to pursue his career as a solo artist. He joins the Brif Records team and releases many successful EP’s. Ark’s weird and smoky atmospheres, floating somewhere between Detroit and Berlin have caught the attention of many renowned artists such as Laurent Garnier, Matthew Herbert, Mr Oizo (with whom he swaps remixes), Jeff Mills, Charles Webster, Mr Scruff or Losoul. Beyond his solo activities a new spell emerged a few months ago, Shalark. It is the duo Shalom and Ark, enriched by the secretly joined Mr. Oizo. Ark’s debut album “Caliente” is out right now on Perlon. On this label he also collaborates with another talent from Paris Cabanne as Copacabannark.

Soundhack was born and is living in Berlin, Germany. He started as a DJ at partys and Berlin clubs in the early 90 s. His favourite styles range from Soul-Funk over Disco to House and Techno music. Spinning inspired him to get into producing music on his own - resulting in the release of “Soundhack 1” in 1997. Being much attracted by his selfmade whitelabel Hard Wax set an exclusive distribution from then on. Equally beside “Soundhack” additional own musical projects emerged. “Soundstream” - as the name indicates - reveals the more flowing side of his music. Collaborating with Errorsmith the latest project “Smith-n-Hack” aims to deliver the whole spectrum of dance music to body and soul. Providing a “Smith-n-Hack” live or dj show with Errorsmith and still spinning solo as Soundhack.

AARDVARCK DJ SET
rushhour | cultcopy | red nose disctrict | amsterdam | nl

Mike Kivits, the man behind Aardvarck, is but one of several respected artists on the Amsterdam-based Delsin label. The producer’s material largely consists of lush, melodic broken beat with the warmth of Detroit techno firmly in mind. Four 12” releases spread across 2000 and 2001 (Non Spoken, Ludiek, Re Spoken, and Nozum) set the table for 2002’s Find the Cow, a 23-track gem of a full-length that vacillates between minute-long interludes and extended mood pieces. Recalling the work of the Black Dog, Sherard Ingram (specifically Urban Tribe’s The Collapse of Modern Culture), and Carl Craig (specifically More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art), Find the Cow - one of the first single-artist LPs released on Delsin - established Kivits as a techno producer worthy of keeping an eye on.
