2008 has begun with a little re-structuring at meerestief headquarters. The original label will be concentrating even more on club orientated as well as functional dancefloor tools, whereas meerestief ltd. is going to put the emphasis firmly on ambitional and profound sound excursions, which could already be seen looking at the last few releases.
The split EP meerestief 018 is being shared by two well-known label acts and underlines this new direction. Our discovery from Singapore, Xhin, released his debut EP ‘Borg’, on meerestief last year, after his praised remix of ‘Ronan’s BBQ’, by Five Green Circle (which could be found, amongst others, on Loco Dice’s Time Warp Mix CD). On his tune ‘Several Ways’, he is trying to take the bull by the horns, in his own perfectionist and detail-laden way. Groove, percussion and sound are making their way to your very soul and legs, in a hypnotic and exciting fashion, free from cliché.
Prolific Berlin Duo, Heinrichs & Hirtenfellner whose home label is Highgrade, were commisioned to do a remix, after just having done celebrated Raz Ohara’s Get Physical. For their version of “Several Ways”, they have reduced the oppulent original, down to just a few of its parts, like a muted chord melody and a vocal sample.
Wacker & Zittrich, who so far have presented meerestief with two singles, are surprisingly uncompromising in their oeuvre. A rolling kick drum and memorable bass references turn “Poetry Slam” into a peak-time hit single. Sebastian Roya’s remix is completely dominated by rhythm and he’s managed to create a more compact version littered with old-school-quotes and flavoured with his tendency to a darker sound.
