Creative use of filters

Post by intellijel »

Just wondering how people are using filters for creative sound design.

Filter sweeps with LP,HP,BP have been done to death. Adding envelopes and triggers can be a little more interesting, automating parameters can be ok too.

However, what techniques are people using to make really cool bleeps and bloops, high pitched percussion, and the other cool little details that can help fill out a track, give it percussive movement or generally be freaky?

yeah I like that one. If you put a short delay on a sound but with a reasonable amount of feedback and then BP or HP the result you can get some pretty cool clicks. If you manipulate delay time at the same time as you play with the filter it is even more interesting.

I'll throw another simple one in to get the ball rolling.

In ableton I sometimes put filters on tracks and then go into the clip that is playing no matter what the length, let's say it is 8 bars, and then unlock the pattern length for the modulation of the filter cutoff and set it to one bar. Then I put in steps to modulate filter cutoff quantised to 1/8th notes to get a steppy pattern modulation that will repeat over the length of the 8 bars (it repeats 8 times during the clip playing).

I like to use lfo filters after my efx on return tracks. For some baselines i use cranked up saturators with a bandpass filter oscillating

Drop the idea of becoming someone else, because you are already a masterpiece.

I like Live 7's sidechain ability on the Autofilter. Pushing/pulling the freq. amount in the rhythm of the bass/kick/perc can be very nice. Use the envelope to get it sharper/lusher.
