NYC Record Stores

I'm having *insane* difficulty finding vinyl here in NYC. Recently, a string of stores have shut down including Satellite (used to be legendary here) and Dance Tracks (not so much), leaving just Etherea, Halcyon, and Vinyl Market.

Compounding troubles even more, Etherea, which was my go-to spot for new minimal releases, has had many problems with their distributor, culminating recently into an absolute dearth of new music to their store. Even their standard stock of releases from M-nus, Spectral Sound, and Perlon have been terribly delayed. (Barem's 'Never Better Than Late' just came in today)

In any case, I'm dying for new releases and I'm fairly unconvinced that the stores I know represent all that's left of good techno in New York. Does anyone know of any other stores? Or does anyone out there in NYC have other methods of buying vinyl that don't involve overseas purchases?

a1 on sixth between 1st and avenue a is amazing for older house records.

etherea on avenue a gets new records, kims on st. marks gets new records, and other music on 4th. also, vinyl market on 10th (or 11th?) gets records.

the problem is that it takes a few weeks before something can get here.

thank god satellite closed. that store was a blight on the world.

damn...you know vinyl is really slipping when even a city like nyc basically loses everything

Thanks for the help! I didn't know Other Music stocked techno, but I'm definitely going to try it out in the next few days. I'll also check out A1 - haven't gotten into much older house music, but there's no reason why I shouldn't check it out.

As for Satellite, I know what you mean. The selection, for the most part, was pretty bad and cheesy-sounding. It also didn't help that the store gave out a really strange vibe - I don't think anyone who worked there was around for more than a few months.

However, I heard that something like 10 years ago, that store was *the* place to go for dance music in NYC. Apparently, the people running the store back then were quite popular at the time for local nightlife.

Yes! Great store! Halcyon and Etherea are what's keeping me going.

I mostly rely on mailorder

If you go this route then really shop around. Sometimes there is a great difference in price +shipping between different sellers.
Frankly, I only buy vinyl if I simply can't live without it and try to mostly buy old $1 records (disco, funk, sh!t I never heard of but like the cover, etc)from dusty thrift stores. Up-to-date stuff is so expensive and the old forgotten classics are often more inspiring anyway.

used to work there...

good for some house records, but techno was few and far between...mainly because i bugged the fck out of them to order sh!t. its mainly nu-rave dance crap that i'm tired of hearing.
