best thing for you to do is to go to a store that has different models and listen to the different ones... especially if you already produce, take a cd of your tracks and go listen to this, because you know these tracks best, you know what you want to hear!

my friend just got the $400 active KRKs and they sound awesome. i also use the alesis mach 1s and they have been very good to me. however, i would have to say that they leave something to be desired in the low mid range. also while shopping, keep in mind that the purpose of a studio monitor is a flat reference, they are not supposed to make your music sound better but to give you a completely accurate reflection of your music. good luck.
