i'm always banging on about analogue filters in this forum, because they are probably the most important part of my production style, but i'm interested in who else is using them, and if anyone has come across any interesting models that give something different.
these are what i have, and what i think of them;
2 xmooger fooger LP, - love them, really warm up anything you put through, great for bass, and takes the edginess out of harsher sounds
moog murf, - not as useful as the LP, but can enhance certain sounds. maybe a little too specialist.
sherman filterbank 2 - definitely the most complex and interesting filter i use, its really a synth without oscillators, but its hard to get exactly right, but when it's right, it can really make a track work, and inject life into it.
pots get scratchy pretty quickly though. needs tender care.
electrix filter factory - looks pretty in my rack, but it's been standing idle most of the time. wouldnt recommend it to anyone. bland, lifeless, and sounds more digital than analogue.
Roland 101 filters - i use 2 x 101's which i converted to take external inputs, sounds sweet as you'd expect.
i suppose i'm looking for something esoteric, something complex but which has the warmth of the moogs, anyone ???

LOL. i think the filters in the xone's sound pretty unique, dont you?plaster wrote:how much did rich pay you to write that?532nm wrote:XONE:92
i forgot you can just buy the filter unit without the mixer called the Xone:VF-1
i like the waldorf filters too.
in general i like analog for lowpass and prefer digital for hipass because they are less harsh.
waldorf miniworks 4-pole, great machine - however, since I went the almost-only software-route (after many years with hardware) I haven't been using it that much.
been thinking of hooking up and just pulling my final mixes through it to add some colour, but the though of having to split the audio into L/R and pull the audiothrough it 2 times disturbs me somewhat
.. and to be honest, the hardware ghosts are still chasing me from time to time
don't know if this is what you're looking for though, it doesn't sound like moog or so but it's warm in my opinion. has a character of its own I'd say, special kind of resonance...

ohhh yes, the mutator - good call... kind of hard to find though?jgb wrote:Mutronics Mutator, not to be forgotten! If you want to go the route of buying synths for their filters, head straight to the Korg MS-20. Using the ESP together with the filters gives you a damn fine sound!
however, I think steevio got an ms-20 already, and in my opinion the ms-20 filter isn't much of a "warm" filter in a moog way to my ears, rather a harsh one. but what do I know
