it's just another tool and an important aspect of production,
if there's people overdoing it because their musical ideas are weak, don't worry about them, they'll be gone soon.
that's a wise vision of the question
i also tend to nerve myself when i listen to this kind of tracks but i promise i will stop

is using lots of distorted guitar in a metal song also a 'fake' or a 'bluff? It disguises bad guitar playing, true, but would the song have the impact without it? Maybe the same thing is true (to an extent) when it comes to reverb and sparse minimal music.

If it wasn't selling people wouldnt be doing it. sh!t sounds good when it is done right. When it stops selling everyone will move on and find the next trend.

As exclusive as many people thing minimal is it follows trends like any other music. Reminds me of the punk rock guys on southpark. The only cool way to dance is to stand still and bob your head while taking a drag every few seconds.

The good thing about minimal is creative minds will break the molds to create new sounds instead of beating the dead horse forever.
